Water or Coke?
I got this from Diane Strang:
WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half the world population.)
#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak
That it is mistaken for hunger.
#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.
#4. One glass of water will s hut down midnight hunger pangs
For almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.
#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of
Water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain
For up to 80% of sufferers.
#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term
Memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
The computer screen or on a printed page.
#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of
Colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
Cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop
Bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water
You should drink every day?
COKE
#1. In many states, the highway patrol carries
Two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from
The highway after a car accident.
#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke
And it will be gone in two days.
#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the
Toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour,
Then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes
Stains from vitreous China .
#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds
Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour
a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble
Away the corrosion.
#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola
To the rusted bolt for several minutes.
#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into
The baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.
Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix
With the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
#8.. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke
Into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run
Through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen
Grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your
Windshield.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
#1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric
Acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major
Contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.
#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the
Commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place
Cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean
Engines of the trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is, would you like a glass of water?
Or Coke?
I get a kick out of reading the wives tales about the uses for Coca-Cola. These have been going around since at least 1995 when much of it appeared in Joey Green's books of wacky uses for household products (http://www.wackyuses.com/books.html). I'm sure it's been going around long before that too since the active ingredient in Coca-Cola (carbonic acid) is in plain soda water (club soda), which has always been deemed a good cleaning solution, probably better than cola since it wouldn't leave the sticky residue when it evaporates.
ReplyDeleteDiane didn't mention some of the many other "beneficial" uses of Coca-Cola. There's relieving constipation, but also preventing diarrhea (especially in locals with bad drinking water). Prevent flatulence by putting a can in the pot when cooking pinto beans (KK might appreciate that). For your "sweety", try conditioning and moussing your hair (gives another meaning to the "bee-hive hairdo").
Coca-cola will also strip paint off of metal patio furniture. It takes a week and you have to keep a towel saturated with the stuff daily (Or you could skip the whole Coke thing and do the whole job in an afternoon with a wire wheel on an electric drill motor). Which would be more boring, watching paint dry or waiting for Coca-cola to strip paint?
I always wondered if maybe the Coca-Cola company kept these urban legends going to improve their sales?
It's not clear from the studies that it is the phosphoric acid in sodas that is causing the increase of osteoporosis or if it might be other factors such as caffeine. Either way, studies do seem to show that drinking large amounts of either colas or caffeine products on a daily basis are probably not good for our health.
Regarding the water recommendations, this might be one place where the oft misinterpreted Philippians 4:5 passage, "everything in moderation" could be applicable. Most likely 8 to 10 (8 oz.) glasses of water a day probably won't hurt you. However, you might want to avoid it if you are using one of those "Bubba" mugs from Walmart. It is known that a gallon of plain water, about ten "large" 12+ fl.oz. glasses, consumed within an hour or two can cause symptoms similar to dehydration, but are actually signs of water intoxication (hyponatremia), which at the most extreme can cause seizures, coma, or death. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (April, 2005) found that 13 percent of Boston Marathon runners developed hyponatremia from drinking too much water.
You can read the discussion about the questionable benefits of drinking 8-10 glasses of water at snopes.com at http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

That's SO funny - I was just thinking this morning that I'd like to make a big pot of beans and cornbread, but would the results be worth it. Barkeep, set me up with a Coke!

Here's a recipe for PINTO BEANS WITH COCA COLA from http://www.nancys-kitchen.com/easy-recipes-with-coke.htm
ReplyDelete1 pound pinto beans (dry)
1/2 c. chopped green or red sweet pepper
2 tsp. chili powder
2 tsp. Salt
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 can Coke
Cook in crockpot 6-8 hours or until done.
Enjoy and tell me how it works (if you know what I mean).
Hmm ... now how about coffee?
