Chronological Reading Plan for May 21, Psalms 95, 97, 98, 99
Today's readings are Psalms 95, 97, 98, 99. Tomorrow's readings are 2 Samuel 24, 1 Chronicles 21-22 and Psalm 30.
Today's Psalms serve two purposes, as far as our plan is concerned. They look back on God's blessings over Israel as David's reign comes to an end and they extol the praises of God.
Notice that the death of many of the faithful leaders is mentioned with little fanfare or drama (Dt 34:1-5). Many of them know they are going to die and know when. Yet they seem to go peacefully, even as little seems to be made of their passing. I believe this is a marker of their faith and trust in God. Even as Christians, we frequently look at death as a tragedy. Indeed it is, but only for those left behind who will miss the departed greatly (Dt 34:6-8). Having been in the presence of a number of people facing death, I can confidently say that, for those who trust in the Lord and His perfect timing, there can be a peaceful anticipation of His presence.
I can only pray that, when my time comes, I can look forward to being with my Lord more than I fear the advent of death.
