Canonical Reading Plan for Nov 11, Jhn 16-18
Today's readings are Jhn 16-18.
Jhn 16 tells us we will be able to live according to the guidelines in Jhn 15 because Jesus will send us the Holy Spirit to help and guide us. We don't have to do it on our own. As a matter of fact, we can't. Jesus not only chooses us to follow Him and be in union with Him (Jhn 15:16), He gives us the capability to do both (Jhn 16:7). Our victory is assured because we are united with Him (Jhn 16;25-33), and He has overcome the consequences of sin and death.
All this is sealed by the beautiful High Priestly prayer in Jhn 17 where we hear the heart of Christ for His own. It's a beautiful prayer that sets the template for Him as our advocate and mediator for all eternity.
Jhn 18 relates the details of Jesus being arrested as does Mat 26 & Luk 23. Not surprisingly, John reveals that Peter is the disciple who tries to defend Jesus with his sword. Jesus utters a sobering truth to Peter and all those who feel that anger and violence are appropriate ways to deal with those who oppose Christ (Jhn 18:11, Mat 26:52).
In a sham of a hearing, in the middle of the night as the city sleeps, Jesus is condemned (Jhn 18:12-40). In the process, another sobering truth is revealed, one that challenges our perception of how believers function in the world while they await their home in heaven. The Kingdom of Jesus is not earthly, it is eternal (Jhn 18:36).
What Jesus is revealing to Pilate is this, His kingdom transcends any material gain or earthly authority. Jesus has His eyes and heart set on eternity and is not shaken by what appears to be a precarious and dangerous situation.
Whatever He has to endure during the short time He is on earth pales in comparison to what is waiting for Him with His Father in heaven. This is not the time to fight and ascertain rights. It is time to honor God in how He suffers His trials. As the church, we would do well to heed the lessons Jesus is teaching. This is not a dark hour, it is the hour of glory. It is an example for us and how we should live.
