Chronological Reading Plan for April 12, 1 Sam 18-20, Psalm 11, 59
Today's readings are 1 Sam 18-20 and Psalms 11, 59.
In 1 Sam 18, David from a close relationship with Saul's son Jonathan. Note how God continually blesses David and how Saul continually responds to those blessings, with jealousy, envy and anger.
It says much about our culture that there are many who would use David's relationship with Jonathan as an example of an unnatural relationship between two men. Scripture clearly condemns such a perversion. The Scriptures also portray their relationship in a positive light, inferring that God blesses it. Either we have a case here of God contradicting Himself or we have an error in interpretation when we see their relationship as anything other than the camaraderie of two males who have an appropriate and blessed relationship. The doctrine of inspiration tells us that the Scriptures do not contradict themselves. This tells us there is something wrong with any interpretation of a passage that is in direct contradiction with the rest of Scripture. We should always look for a deeper, better understanding of the Bible rather than mistakes and contradictions.
In 1 Sam 19-20, Jonathan grows closer to David, Saul become increasingly vexed by David. Saul's anger will ultimately be his undoing. Instead of rejoicing in how God is using David, Saul is selfishly opposing all David does, thereby opposing God, Himself.
This should cause all of us to wonder how many times our anger and jealousy bring us into opposition to God.

It's a common temptation to be jealous of a gift (or gifting) that God has given someone else, and forget the gifts (or giftings) that he has given you. What a blessing when we can focus on the blessings we've received and not be bitter about that which we don't have. Don't be fooled into believing that God is holding out on you. He knows what we need, and he has promised to provide what we need. Bless others for the gifts that they have and be thankful for those that you have.
