The View from MY chair (which is right next to John's)

When John asked me months ago if I'd like to go to a conference with him, I said "Why yes!" I think it shocked him as much as me. Some of what was on the table I quickly discarded, not because I didn't want to go, but because traditionally the MacArthur and Begg conferences have been for the men to have bonding time together. The EFCA conference in New Mexico was tempting just for its destination, but the content of the conference was of no interest. ( My truest and deepest longing is still to go to a Worship Conference. You may choose to insert a heavy sigh here or go with me in late July/early August to Gaithersburg for a Sovereign Grace Worship Conference, depending on my work calendar.)

Still, the opportunity to hear John Piper and John MacArthur for myself was very tempting. I have not heard them yet, but I eagerly anticipate the coming hour, even if it is 8AM!!! I am in awe of the speakers we've heard so far: Ligon Duncan and Thabiti Anyabwile. Both are gracious, humble men of great depth. I am also extremely blessed to be one of the very few women attending...the blessing is hearing the men sing during worship. (I always wanted to be a fly on the wall at a Promise Keepers Event, just for the worship.) How very beautiful to hear 6000 men praising God through song and what a great honor to sing with them. John said they are mostly Pastors.

FYI, the opening session was yet another continuation of Tom's service. We sang "A Mighty Fortress" and "It is Well". As a matter of fact, so far, all the worship has been hymns. Amazing that 7 years ago or so, I was opposed to singing hymns. They just weren't intimate enough. Ha! I now love intimacy and doctrine! And there CAN be great intimacy in all songs that based in the Truth. (likewise there can be love songs without a firm foundation, hmmmmm, can I get an "amen"?)

Enough for tonight...John gives you the meat. My ramblings are mere garnishes. Still I send my love to all of you! Kel

  1. I read your blog about hating hymns 7 years ago. Same here.

Then I got sick of such shallow choruses. Now I really enjoy hymns, as well as solid songs by Sovereign Grace. What a difference though, when every song is sunk deep in the cross of our Savior. It truly produces worship.
    Blessings.
