Worship?..........Me?.......Forever?
You can view the title of this post as a question.....or as a command from God, about God. Regardless of how any of us look at it...in the final analysis, it will be God who determines when and how we will worship Him. I believe the answers to both of those conditions; when and how, is forever and completely.
So what is this 'worship'?
This is such a fundamental part of our relationship with the Lord yet it is so misunderstood, mishandled and approached so casually, at times, it’s frightening. You can walk into any church on any given Sunday morning (even our own!) during the “music” part of the service and find a wide variety of participation. You would see everything from overly enthusiastic, self centered singing to bored and detached “When will this be over?” disinterest.
Praise God! There will always be (in particular at WBF) a group of folks whose worship is a Christ centered pouring out of their hearts and spirits to the Lord in thanks for His own greatness and glory.
I’m convinced that there are going to be a lot of really surprised people in heaven. I just don’t see us standing before the throne of God and grumbling, “When will this music stop and we get to the good stuff?” or “I wish our heavenly Father would pick some songs I like instead of this stuff! This is not worship! Real worship is done the way I like it! If this doesn’t change, I’m going to find another heaven to go to!”
Scott Ferrell will be speaking in more depth on this on Jan 27. I’m looking forward to his sermon. For now, I thought we might take a look at what worship is like in heaven.
Here’s an interesting passage in Isaiah:
Isaiah 6:1 In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
3 And one called out to another and said,
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts,
The whole earth is full of His glory.”
I think this is a glimpse into the
throne room. I believe this is what it’s like in there….all the time. The Seraphim’s duty is to praise God and sing of His glory. It’s not their part time job. It’s not what they do on Sunday mornings. It’s why they were created and their whole reason for existing.
Let’s look at another passage, this on a glimpse of the same throne room at the end of the ages……
Rev 4:6 and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.
7 The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.
8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,
“HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.”
9 And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever,
There’s no way to be sure…..but I believe the ‘4 living creatures’ described here are the same ones we see in Isaiah. Think about this for a moment……..thousands of years have passed and they are still worshipping God with all their might. Even if they’re not the same creatures, look what’s happening in the throne room……the same thing we saw in Isaiah! With all the history of mankind behind them, with all the musical styles that have come and gone, with all the learning of men complete….worship before the living God is unchanged and constant. And, get this….it’s on His terms….no one else’s!
Roll this over in your hearts and minds this week as we prepare to worship Him on Sunday morning.
