Around Town - Silent Sentinel

There it stands, the Silent Sentinel of Route 29. Just south of town directly across from the equally mysterious "Mahogany Furniture Place" that never really seems to do any business but always has new owners. The Silent Sentinel stands.....and waits.

No one remembers why it was built, or even who may have built it. It is just there.....waiting. For what it waits, we are unaware of as well. We can only speculate as to the secrets that may be unlocked by activating its' dormant LEDs. Could it help us, serve us? Or is it possible that it's better left undisturbed as it's unspoken messages may be of a disastrous or dangerous nature, things we know, deep down inside but would prefer never to hear. We may never know. All we can say for sure is that it stands.

Tales passed down through the years claim that it was built at great cost and was originally intended to be a benefactor to those who passed beneath it. Do we attempt to awaken it or would it be the wiser to allow it to continue to slumber? For now, it bears a striking resemblance to the poets of Springsteen's 'Jungleland' who "...write nothing at all...they just stand back and let it all be." The answers to queries concerning its' benevolent or malevolent nature remain locked up in the ever ready yet darkened words and nonflashing letters of this 'Silent Sentinel'.

  1. Apparently, they installed it facing the wrong direction. What a mistake and waste of $$.

  3. I had a friend at VDOT check into the purpose of that sign. He said that is was malfunctioning, but that it is fixed now. You can see it's real purpose in this photo he sent me today by going to http://www.flickr.com/photos/87013076@N00/1454824070/
